The Geography of Wonder

Why the Lençóis Maranhenses Are Unrivalled for Kitesurfing

Imagine a Sahara of pure white sand, carved by emerald freshwater lagoons that only exist for a few weeks each year. This is the Lençóis Maranhenses kitesurfing experience.

Unlike anywhere else on earth, these lagoons are formed by seasonal rainfall trapped between massive dunes. From June to July, the consistent NE tradewinds transform this desert into a kiteboarding playground with glass-flat water and endless transitions.

Questions About the Brazil Expedition

What level of kitesurfer do I need? expand_more
While the lagoons are flat and forgiving, we recommend an intermediate level (comfortable riding upwind) to navigate between different spots. We offer elite coaching for those looking to master freestyle or strapless dune riding. Apply and tell us your level →
How do I get to Atins from Europe? expand_more
The best route is flying into São Paulo (GRU) or Rio, then a domestic flight to São Luís (SLZ). From there, our private 4x4 handles the 4-hour journey across the sand to the village of Atins. Apply to receive our logistics guide →
What is the wind like in this region? expand_more
Expect consistent NE trade winds between 18-28 knots daily. The wind is incredibly steady as it blows across the ocean and then over the smooth, unobstructed dunes before hitting the lagoons. Ready to ride? Apply here →
