The Best Kite Spots on Egypt's Red Sea: A World-Champion Guide

Egypt's Red Sea is a phenomenon that most kite travelers know about, but few truly understand. After three seasons guiding riders across its lagoons — from Soma Bay to Ras Sudr to the remote northern islands accessible only by private vessel — I can tell you that "kitesurfing Egypt Red Sea" is not one experience. It is a hundred.

The question I get most from our Local Secrets XP applicants is: which spot is the best? My answer is always the same: it depends on what you are chasing. This guide breaks it down.

Why Egypt's Red Sea Is Kitesurfing's Most Consistent Destination

The Red Sea sits in a channel between Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. In the summer months (May to September), a pressure differential between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean creates a thermal wind system that delivers 20–30 knot north-north-westerly winds with almost metronomic reliability. What this means for kitesurfers: you can count on wind. Not sometimes. Not mostly. Almost always.

Add to this water temperatures that stay between 25°C and 30°C year-round, and you have a destination that is simultaneously forgiving for intermediates and limitless for advanced riders seeking progression.

The Three Tiers of Egypt Kite Spots

1. The Lagoons: Flat-Water Playgrounds

The most photogenic and skill-building spots on the Egyptian coast are the natural lagoons — shallow, turquoise basins protected from ocean chop by barrier reefs. Soma Bay near Hurghada has perhaps the most famous lagoon on the coast, where the water depth ranges from knee-deep to waist-deep over vast stretches of sand. It is a perfect location for learning and for riders focused on freestyle, where consistent ground and flat water allow you to push your tricks without the fear of a heavy landing.

Further north, the lagoons become more remote and more spectacular. On the Local Secrets XP Egypt expedition, we access lagoons that require a tender boat transfer from our anchored mega-yacht — spots that are shared only with the occasional fisherman and a colony of seabirds.

2. The Open Water: Big Air Territory

When the thermal accelerates through mid-afternoon, the open water off Egypt's coast transforms. Waves build to a consistent 1–2 metre chop, and the 25+ knot wind creates ideal big air conditions. This is my personal territory: unhooked tricks, massive boosts, and the feeling of weightlessness that only a proper Red Sea thermal can give you.

For riders at an advanced level, the open water sessions are where the magic happens. My coaching approach on these sessions focuses on edge control, timing your pop against the chop, and landing technique — the three pillars of injury-free progression in power conditions.

3. The Remote Northern Islands: The Ultimate Kite Safari

The true secret of Egypt kite travel is what lies north of the tourist infrastructure. Between El Gouna and the Sinai Peninsula, a string of uninhabited islands and pristine reefs sits accessible only by liveaboard. On the Local Secrets XP expedition, our private mega-yacht anchors at these locations — some with no official name on any map — and we spend entire days kiting waters that have, in some cases, never been kited before.

Wind readings at these northern spots consistently show the strongest and cleanest conditions of the entire trip. With no land downwind to disrupt the flow, the thermals here are pure.

When to Go: Egypt Kite Season Explained

The best kite spots Egypt offers are available year-round, but there are two peak windows. The summer thermal season (May–September) brings the most reliable winds but also the highest temperatures — air temps can hit 40°C, making midday sessions on land uncomfortable. The autumn season (October–November) is when we run our Local Secrets expeditions: the wind remains consistent, the temperatures drop to a perfect 28°C, and the tourist crowds have largely gone.

Our 2026 Egypt expedition runs October 25 – November 2 and November 5 – November 13. Both dates sit in what I consider the golden window.

What Level Do You Need for Egypt?

The lagoon spots are accessible from an intermediate level — comfortable riding upwind, able to body drag safely, and able to self-rescue. The open water and big air sessions are best suited to advanced riders who want to push their progression with direct in-water coaching.

On all Local Secrets XP expeditions, we cap the group at 8 riders specifically so that every person gets coaching appropriate to their level — whether that's refining upwind body position or unlocking their first double.
